Saint-Henri<\/b>\u00a0is a neighbourhood in southwestern\u00a0Montreal,\u00a0Quebec,\u00a0Canada located \u00a0in the\u00a0borough\u00a0of\u00a0Le Sud-Ouest.\u00a0Saint-Henri is usually considered to be bounded to the east by Atwater Avenue, to the west by\u00a0Autoroute 15, to the north by\u00a0Autoroute 720, and to the south by the\u00a0Lachine Canal<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Saint-Henri,\u00a0is historically known\u00a0as a \u00a0French-Canadian and Irish working class\u00a0neighbourhood and often contrasted with wealthy\u00a0Westmount \u00a0area which looks down at it over the St. Jacques Escarpment (Falaise Saint-Jacques)*<\/strong>,\u00a0The\u00a0municipality\u00a0was incorporated into the City of Montreal in 1905.\u00a0The borough hall for\u00a0Le Sud-Ouest\u00a0is located in Saint-Henri, in a converted factory, bearing witness to the borough’s industrial heritage.\u00a0In recent years it has been strongly affected by\u00a0gentrification<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Strongman\u00a0Louis Cyr<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0lived and served as a police officer in Saint-Henri. Celebrated\u00a0jazz\u00a0pianist\u00a0Oscar Peterson<\/a>\u00a0grew up in\u00a0Little Burgundy<\/a>\u00a0which is the neighborhood adjacent to Saint-Henri. Stand-up comedian\u00a0Yvon Deschamps<\/a>\u00a0has treated the daily struggle of Saint-Henri’s citizens with humorous melancholy.Also the early days of the bustle of the passenger rail station in St. Henri was immortalized in the song “Place St. Henri.”<\/p>\n

*\u00a0The\u00a0Saint-Jacques Escarpment<\/b>\u00a0(French:\u00a0Falaise Saint-Jacques<\/b><\/i>) is a\u00a0green space\u00a0along an\u00a0escarpment\u00a0in the city of\u00a0Montreal, west of\u00a0downtown\u00a0Montreal\u00a0and adjacent to the neighbourhood of\u00a0Notre-Dame-de-Grace. The\u00a0wooded\u00a0area stretches 3\u00a0km (2\u00a0mi) long, covering over 20\u00a0ha (49\u00a0acres).[1]<\/a>\u00a0<\/sup>The escarpment’s dense stands of poplar trees and its location between\u00a0Mount Royal\u00a0and the\u00a0Lachine Rapids\u00a0make it notable for a number of species of resident and migratory birds, and a large population of\u00a0brown snakes.[1]<\/a>\u00a0<\/sup>The escarpment had served as a\u00a0dumping ground\u00a0before it was purchased by the\u00a0City of Montreal\u00a0for use as parkland, but it is not open to the public.
