Short Stories / Reloaded (Part Two)

Jump (the paradox of being)

Jump (the paradox of being) was originally shot in 2010 for the Hybrid Sculptural Object entitled Presence, part of the installation The Obscure Objects of Desire and the Rise of the Technological Chimera.

Reedited here as a stand alone video with a sound track for the Short Stories / Reloaded Series.

While developing Presence in 2010, I came across this definition defining the notion of presence on the Stanford University’s interdisciplinary media website, Metamedia, which aptly defines the underlying pinning of the work.

Presence is a contested aspect of social and cultural experience. Notions of presence hinge on the relationship between the live and mediated, on notions of immediacy, authenticity and originality. Presence prompts questions of the character of self-awareness, of the presentation of self. Interaction is implicated — presence implies being in someone’s presence.

And agency – one’s ability to effect such representation and relationship. Location too — to be present is to be somewhere. Hence presence also directs us outside the self into the social and spatial. And also, of course, presence directs us into temporality — a fulcrum is tense and the relationship between past and present (n. par)

㋶ quantum Flux

The physicist Erwin Schrödingert (of the Schrödinger’s cat theory fame) stated in explaining quantum entanglement that: another way of expressing the peculiar situation is: the best possible knowledge of a whole does not necessarily include the best possible knowledge of all its parts, even though they may be entirely separate and therefore virtually capable of being ‘best possibly known,’ i.e., of possessing, each of them, a representative of its own.

For my part I have always been fascinated by quantum mechanics, that hidden yet sometimes immeasurable theoretical force existing in the back drop of our existence.

In this short piece I try imaging what that would look like – in a very simplistic imagining, of course – what of all those molecules and atoms and their affiliated parts – electrons, protons, neutrons, and their esoteric particles of quarks and gluons are doing as we go about our daily lives.

㋶ traces of Alien Life

traces of Alien Life (original title Day 2.1) was created in 2017 for The DAY for NIGHT Project, a Fiction-Based Interactive AR (Augmented Reality) project broken into twenty-three (23) Story Frames, which in turn were broken into DAYS and their corresponding NIGHTS. Each STORY FRAME recounts a certain event in the protagonist’s life and is expressed by four distinct elements or AUGMENTED LAYERS – as a print, video, short story and Geo-specific marker within the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA.

DAY 2.1 ♱♱♱ He had wakened to the sound of the jackhammers and voices drilling through the paper-thin walls of his apartment.

More condo developments were on their way.

Shadows danced off the bedroom walls mimicking the condo’s progress.

Each day the shadows grew longer and paler. Soon there would be no light.. ♱♱♱

㋶ night Fall

night Fall (original title Night 9.0) was created in 2017 for The DAY for NIGHT Project, a Fiction-Based Interactive AR (Augmented Reality) project broken into twenty-three (23) Story Frames, which in turn were broken into DAYS and their corresponding NIGHTS. Each STORY FRAME recounts a certain event in the protagonist’s life and is expressed by four distinct elements or AUGMENTED LAYERS – as a print, video, short story and Geo-specific marker within the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA.

NIGHT 9.0 ♱♱♱

V. watched in silence.

as the night fell. censoring the hues of the indigo sky.

knowing that the memories she’d built would some-day fade.

once again.
